Meet Dr. James Woodson, DDS

Dr. Woodson was born and raised in the courthouse area of Gloucester, Virginia.  College eventually led him to Richmond, Virginia, and the School of Dentistry at the Medical College of Virginia.  With dental degree in hand, it was off to Greenville, NC for residency.  Residency is not required for dentists.  These programs provide additional experience in an area of study.  For instance, oral surgery or orthodontics.

Back in 2002, there was no East Carolina University School of Dentistry.  Instead, The ECU Brody School of Medicine offered dentists a one-year General Practice residency.  At Pitt County Memorial Hospital Dr. Woodson practiced hospital based dental care and benefited from teaching rotations with the medical doctors.

In December 2003, Dr. Woodson began practicing in his current location at the Outer Banks Hospital.

Dr. Woodson was married in 1995 to his wife, Linnea.  They reside in Manteo and have been fortunate enough to have four children.

Over the years Dr. Woodson has enjoyed coaching baseball and serving on several boards including the Outer Banks YMCA, Chamber of Commerce, Community Care Clinic, and the Board of Health/HHS.

Prophylaxis

You may call a Dental Prophylaxis a different name: Cleaning,

Tooth Polishing, Check-up,  Re-care.  The goal of a prophylaxis or prophy is to prevent gingivitis (inflammation and bleeding of the gums) and periodontal (gum) disease by removing debris that has accumulated at or above the gum line since your last visit. Some accumulation is normal even in the mouth of a great brusher and flosser. More about Prophylaxis

Dental Implants

The replacement of a missing tooth with a dental implant, abutment and crown is the closest modern dentistry can come to a restoring the root-tooth-gum-bone complex when a tooth or teeth are lost.  Several implants can be used to replace a series of missing teeth. Five or more implants can be used to replace all of the teeth in the upper or lower dental arches.

Esthetic Dentistry

Esthetic dentistry can be found at many dentists’ offices. Most dentists do not advertise themselves as “cosmetic” dentists, but do quite exceptional work on a day to day basis. Most of the esthetic demands are met when the form of the tooth follows its natural function…form follows function.  With an exceptional dental lab as a partner and a great camera to communicate color and texture, anything is possible. I take pictures of the color of back teeth when I am treating a back tooth with a crown. Just because your neighbors won’t see it doesn't mean esthetic excellence is forgotten. These are the goals and benefits of your child’s first visit:

Discuss hygiene.  When to brush, when to start with toothpaste, fluoride rinses, etc.

Rule out any obvious dental developmental issues. Discuss nutrition (nursing, bottles in the crib, etc.) that may affect the teeth.

• Help your child develop a sense of having a “dental home” where they feel safe and cared for.

Your Child's First Dental Visit

I also subscribe to the American Academy of Pediatricians and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry's recommendation that states “your child should see a pediatric dentist when the first tooth appears or no later than his/her first birthday.”

Dr. Woodson’s Office Philosophy

I will treat all children in need if they meet the following criteria:

The child is able to cooperate to insure their safety during treatment

The treatment is not too extensive. Multiple visits can build fear and anxiety in a child

If the situation does not meet both criteria, then I will recommend a pediatric dentist

Orthodontic is the branch of dentistry that corrects teeth and jaws that are positioned improperly. Crooked teeth and teeth that do not fit together correctly are harder to keep clean, are at risk of being lost early due to tooth decay, and periodontal disease, and cause extra stress on the chewing muscles that can lead to headaches, TMJ syndrome and neck, shoulder and back pain. Teeth that are crooked or not in the right place can also detract from one's appearance. (American Association of Orthodontics.)
